Richard Johnson practices in the areas of insurance law, railroad law, and admiralty and maritime law. Mr. Johnson has practiced law throughout metropolitan Chicago in the circuit courts of Cook County and all of the collar counties. He has tried numerous cases to verdicts in the state courts. He practices in the United States District Courts also and has appeared in cases nationwide (approximately 25 cities) and tried numerous cases in federal courts to verdicts in Chicago and in other cities.
Experience:  Mr. Johnson has over 30 years of experience in nearly all types of civil litigation, including construction, railroad, admiralty, commercial, intellectual property, and insurance.

He has had extensive experience in claims involving the hospitality industry. This includes hotels, restaurants, theaters and bars. Mr. Johnson also has extensive experience in claims against municipalities and other local governmental entities and insurers. Claims in which he is experienced include zoning disputes, civil rights, taxation, and wrongful termination. In addition, he is experienced in the defense of arson claims.

Honors, Education, and Activities: Mr. Johnson on several occasions was a speaker before the National Safety Congress and before insurance organizations. He is a lecturer for the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education and the author of "Interjurisdictional Depositions," Illinois Civil Discovery Practice (IICLE 1979, 1983, 1987, 1996, 2003).

Mr. Johnson received the Edward J. Lewis II 2004 Award of the Chicago Bar Foundation for commitment to justice and equality in pro bono service. Richard Johnson served on the Board of the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel for nine years and received a Meritorious Service Award. He also is a court appointed arbitrator for the Circuit Court of Cook County mandatory arbitration program. Mr. Johnson's qualifications when reviewed for election to the bench resulted in Mr. Johnson being among 4 individuals rated "highly qualified" out of 86 reviewed by the Chicago Bar Association in 2004. 

Mr. Johnson is admitted to practice law in all courts of the State of Illinois (1969) and all the courts of the State of Indiana (2005); the United States Supreme Court (1978); U.S. District Court, C.D. Illinois (2000); U.S. District Court, N.D. Illinois (1969); U.S. District Court, N.D. Indiana (2006); the U.S. Court of Appeals, 2nd Circuit (1980); U.S. Court of Appeals, 5th Circuit (1993); U.S. Court of Appeals, 7th Circuit (1977); U.S. Court of Appeals, 9th Circuit (1991). 

Mr. Johnson has degrees from Northwestern University School of Law, J.D., cum laude, 1969 and Miami University (Ohio), B.S., 1966. Richard was Law Clerk from 1969-1970 to Hon. Richard B. Austin, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. In 1968, he received the American Jurisprudence Award in Evidence. He is a member of the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel; Chicago Bar Association; Illinois State Bar Association; Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel; and the Union League Club.
