Donald Peterson is among a few lawyers to have appeared both before the United States Supreme Court and the Illinois Supreme Court, in addition to trying many cases to juries in the state and federal trial courts.  He argued before the United States Supreme Court for offers of judgment to bar fee awards, Marek v. Chesny, 473 U.S. 1, and before the Illinois Supreme Court for a shorter statute of limitations in building construction, Hernon v. Corrigan, 149 Ill.2d 190.

Experience:  Mr. Peterson's depth of legal experience spans a wide range of civil litigation and dispute resolution. His trial and appellate practice currently concentrates on claims of professional liability. In representing design professionals, accountants and lawyers, he assists in claim avoidance and provides law suit defense.

He is highly experienced in civil litigation in both the trial and appellate courts. He is retained by self-insured and insured A&E design professionals and by lawyer and accountant professional liability insurers. He represents enterprises from across the United States and from Europe. He has over 100 jury verdicts and a variety of trial experience, including law suits on design and construction of public, commercial, high rise, and industrial structures. In his law practice, he also has managed construction claims and counsels in the avoidance of construction claims for self-insureds and excess insurers.

Honors, Education, and Activities:  Mr. Peterson served the Illinois Supreme Court for nine years by appointment to the Court's Rules Committee, which provides recommendations to the Court for Supreme Court Rules and the Committee Comments to the Rules.

Mr. Peterson is published on civil practice and professional liability topics in the journals of the Chicago Bar Assoc. in 2006, and the Il. Assoc. of Defense Trial Counsel in 2008. He has been a Mediator for the Circuit Court of Cook County; Editor-in-Chief of the Illinois Bar Journal; and Editor-in-Chief of Trial Briefs Newsletter. He chaired the Chicago Bar Association Judiciary Committee; the ISBA Civil Practice Section Council; the ISBA Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Committee; the ISBA Professional Quality in the Practice of Law Committee. He is serving since 2000 on the Professional Conduct Committee of the Il. State Bar, providing lawyer professional conduct advisory opinions.

He has been elected to the Board of Governors and the Assembly of the Illinois State Bar; Board of the Appellate Lawyers Association; Board of the Society of Trial Lawyers of Illinois; and Board of the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel.

His degrees are from Northwestern University, School of Law (Chicago, Illinois), J.D., 1965, and Miami University, College of Arts & Sciences (Oxford, Ohio), B.A., 1962. He is admitted to practice before all courts in the State of Illinois; the United States District Courts (Northern Dist. of Ill.)(Northern District of Indiana); the United States Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit (Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin); and the Supreme Court of the United States.

Professional Recognition: Mr. Peterson is AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell. He is also a Best's Listed Recommended Attorney and International Chamber of Commerce-USCIB Arbitrator. He has been annually selected as a Super Lawyer since 2007.
