HSPRD, in collaboration with the Pozen Center for Human Rights of the University of Chicago, hosted a speaking event with Emilio Alvarez Icaza earlier this week. Mr. Icaza is the Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights. At the event, he spoke about the dire situation of the Mexican political system and human rights abuses, the destruction of the jungles and indigenous communities in Central and South America, the denationalization in the Dominican Republic, human rights violations in the prison system, and the socio-political context in each country and how these both challenges and provide opportunities for the work of the Commission.
