Join HSPRD in celebrating Latine Heritage Month, an annual commemoration of the history, culture, and achievements of people of Latine descent. HSPRD is proud to be founded in Chicago, a city home to a long, diverse legacy of the Latine community, with roots in Latin America, the Caribbean, and other Spanish colonies.
For Latine Heritage Month, events around Chicago showcase different cultural aspects of the Latine community. At the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture, an exhibition titled Abuela’s house serves as a “love letter to identity, cultural inheritance, craftsmanship, and home.” Artist Destyni “Desi” Swoope was inspired by her great-grandmother. The Chicago Public Libraries is also hosting arts and crafts, film screenings, and book discussions related to Latine Heritage, a schedule of which can be found here.
While this is a month for celebrating, it is also important to acknowledge Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (“ICE”) increasing presence in our city and the disproportionate impact on Latine community members and advocates. HSPRD stands in solidarity with community partners, advocates, and our neighbors who are directly affected by ICE’s continued intimidation and dehumanizing operations. HSPRD believes in the rights of everyone to live safely in their community without being racially profiled.
