HSPRD’s fight for accountability on behalf of the family of Robert L. Brooks Sr. has resulted in a historic $24 million settlement with the state of New York. Robert was brutally beaten to death by correctional officers in a New York prison while he was handcuffed and defenseless. The body-worn camera footage of Robert’s final moments shocked the nation and forced a long overdue reckoning with the prevalence and degree of violence inside New York’s prison system.
HSPRD Partner Elizabeth Mazur led our team in the fight for justice for Robert’s family, bringing creativity, dedication, and an unwavering belief in what justice should look like. “No amount of money can bring Robert home,” said Mazur, “but this outcome sends a powerful message that the horrors Robert endured cannot be overlooked or excused.”
